“Something happened and I can't stop thinking about it.”
Therapy for trauma and PTSD
Trauma can come from one event or from things that went on for years. If it still affects you, it's worth talking about. You set the pace, and you don't have to tell the whole story to start.
If you're thinking about hurting yourself or feel unsafe right now, call or text 988, or call 911.
What it can feel like
- A certain sound or smell takes you right back.
- You sit where you can see the door.
- You have trouble sleeping, or you wake up from bad dreams.
- You feel numb, or far away from the people you love.
- You go out of your way to avoid a certain street or store.
How therapy can help
Trauma therapy often begins with how you're doing now. Early sessions usually focus on daily life, like sleeping better and finding ways to calm your body when memories come up. You and your therapist get to know each other before going near the hardest parts.
You decide what to share and when. You don't have to tell the whole story to start, and you can pause or change the subject at any point. When you're ready, therapy can help you make sense of what happened so it has less hold on your life.

Questions people ask
Do I have to talk about what happened?
Not until you're ready. You set the pace, and you don't have to tell the whole story to start. Many people begin with what's hard right now, like sleep or always feeling on guard.
What if it wasn't as bad as what other people went through?
You don't have to compare. If something still affects your sleep, mood or relationships, it's worth bringing to therapy.
What if I feel overwhelmed during a session?
Tell your therapist, or ask to stop. You can take a break, slow down or talk about something else. Part of the work is learning ways to settle yourself when feelings get big.
The first step is a phone call or a short form.
You don't need the right words. We'll take it from there, and you can switch therapists any time it doesn't fit.
